■今週はマークとアンの結婚5周年。マークはお祝に特別にロマンティックな夕食を計画しています。
It's Mark and Anne's 5th Wedding Anniversary this week, and Mark is planning a special romantic dinner to celebrate.

■アンが仕事に出るのを待って、マークは最近知ったイタリアンレストランを予約するために受話器をとります。
He waits for Anne to leave for work, and then picks up the phone to make a reservation at an Italian place that he heard about recently.

■電話にでた相手が少々早口だったため、正しい番号にかけたかどうか不安です。
The person who answers the phone speaks a little quickly, so Mark is not sure he has got the right number.

◆「もしもし、そちらは『ベリーニ』ですか？」とマークは尋ねます。「そうですか、7:30に2名予約したいのですが-」
"Hello, is that 'Bellini'?" asks Mark. "Yes, I'd like to book a table for 2, at 7:30 - " 　※太字部分直訳：2人のためのテーブルを予約したい。

◇「申し訳ございません。電話回線の状態が悪いようです。もう一度おっしゃってくださいませんか？」
"I'm sorry sir; it's a bit of a bad line. Could you repeat that please?"

◆「ええ、もちろん。」とマークが言います。「えーと、今週金曜日の7:30に2人分の席は取れますか？」
"Oh, yes, sure," says Mark. "Erm, do you have a table for 2 at 7:30 this Friday please?"　※太字部分直訳：2人のためのテーブルがありますか。

◇「お調べします。申し訳ございません。金曜は混んでおりまして、お席にご案内できるのは一番早くて8:30となっておりますが…」
"Just let me check. Oh, I'm sorry sir but we're a bit busy on Friday. The earliest we could seat you is 8:30..."

■「なんてこった！」マークは思いました。「特別な夜なのに！」するとレストランのマネージャーは何か提案しています。
"Oh no!" thinks Mark, "it's our special night!" But then the restaurant manager suggests something.

◇「もし早めにお出でになるのでしたら、テーブルが空くまでバーでお飲物でもいかがでしょう…」
"But if you want to come earlier you're welcome to have a drink at the bar while you wait for your table..."

■マークはちょっと考えて、それは良い考えかもしれないと思いました。
Mark thinks for a moment, and decides that this would be a good idea.

◆「ああ、それはいいですね。ありがとう。」
"Oh OK, that sounds fine, thank you."

◇「ではお二人ですね。お名前は…？」
"So that's a table for 2 in the name of...?"

◆「レイター、L-E-Y-T-E-R…それと窓際の禁煙席でお願いできますか？」
"Leyter, that's L-E-Y-T-E-R...and would it possible to have a non-smoking table near the window please?"　※太字部分直訳：窓付近の禁煙テーブルを取ることは可能ですか？

◇「もちろんです。問題ありません。ではレイター様、金曜8:30でご予約賜りました。」
"Certainly, that's no problem. OK, Mr Leyter, we have you down for 8:30 on Friday."

◆「はい、どうもありがとう。それじゃ。」
"OK, thanks very much, bye."

■「よっしゃ！」電話を切りながらマークは思いました。「アンもこのレストランを気に入るはず！金曜日が待ち遠しいなぁ。
"Great!" thinks Mark as he hangs up the phone. "Anne is going to love this place! I can't wait for Friday..."

■金曜日。マークとアンはレストランにやって来ました。中に入ると案内係が彼らを迎えます。
Friday comes, and Mark and Anne arrive at the restaurant. As they walk in, the maitre d' greets them.

◇「今晩は。お二人ですか？」
"Good evening sir, table for 2?"

◆「えぇ、実は予約してるんです。レイターの名前で、8:30に…」
"Er yes...actually I have a reservation, in the name of Leyter, for 8:30...?"

◇「レイター？ああ、その通りです。禁煙席ですね。お待ちになる間お飲物はいかがですか？こちらです…」
"Leyter...? Ah OK, that's right, a non-smoking table. Would you like to have a drink while you're waiting? Come this way..."

■マークとアンは係に従いバーに来ました。そこで二人はロマンティックなカクテルを楽しみ、5年前の結婚式の日を思い出しました。しばらくして、ウェイターがやって来ました。
Mark and Anne follow the maitre d' to the bar where they enjoy a romantic cocktail, remembering their wedding day 5 years ago. After a few minutes, a waiter approaches them.

◇「失礼ですが、テーブルの準備が整いましたのでこちらへ」とウェイターは言って窓際の素敵なテーブルへ案内します。
"Excuse me, your table is ready now, if you'll follow me," he says and shows them to a nice table by the window.

◇「さぁ、こちらです。」
"Here you are."

◆「ありがとう。」マークとアンが言います。二人とも素晴らしい眺めに喜んでいます。
"Thank you," say Mark and Anne, who are very pleased with the great view.

◇「ワインリストをご覧になりますか？」
"Would you like to see the wine list?"

◆「そうですね、お願いします。」
"Oh yes please..."

■数分後、メニューとワインリストに目を通した後、マークはウェイターに目で合図します。ウェイターがやって来ました。
A few minutes later, after looking at the menu and wine list, Mark catches the waiter's eye, and he comes over.

◇「ご注文、よろしいですか？」
"Are you ready to order sir?"

◆「はい。」マークが答えます。「僕はナスのタリアテッリ。それとスターターにはシーザーサラダをお願いします。」
"Yes," says Mark, "I'll have the eggplant tagliatelli please. Oh and a Caesar salad to start."

◆「私もシーザーサラダをお願いします。」とアン。「それに…ラビオリにニンニクが入っているかどうか教えてくださいます？」
"I'd like a Caesar salad too please," says Anne, "and...can you tell me if the ravioli contains garlic?"

◇「いいえ、入っておりません。」
"No it doesn't madam."

◆「じゃぁ、それにするわ。」
"OK, I'll have that then please."

◇「はい、承りました。何かお飲みになりますか？」
"OK, very good. Would you like anything to drink?"

◆「ええ。ボトルワインがいいな。何かオススメはありますか？」マークが尋ねます。
"Yes, we'd like a bottle of wine. What do you recommend?" asks Mark.

◇「そうですね、ハウスワインの白がメインディッシュに良く合うと思います。辛口ですが繊細な味です。」
"Well, the house white would go very well with your main dishes. It's quite dry but with a delicate taste."

◆「そうですか。」マークが言います。「それじゃ、ハウスワインの白をボトルでお願いします。」
"OK," says Mark, "we'll have a bottle of house white then please".

◆「それとお水もお願いします。」とアンが素早く付け加えます。
"And some water please", adds Anne quickly.

◇「かしこまりました。ミネラルウォーターと水道水がありますがいかがしましょう？」ウェイターがアンに尋ねます。
"Certainly. Would you like mineral water or tap water?" the waiter asks Anne.

◆「ミネラルウォーターで」
"Mineral water please."

◇「スパークリングですか、スティルですか？」
"Sparkling or still?"
※sparkling water=炭酸入りミネラルウォーター、still=普通のミネラルウォーター

◆「えっと…」とアンは沢山の質問に少し驚いた様子で答えます。
"Oh..." says Anne, a little surprised at so many questions.

◆「スパークリングでお願いします。」
"Sparkling thanks!"

■ウェイターはオーダーを書き留めて、さらに質問します。
The waiter writes down their orders and then asks another question.

◇「では、デザートはいかがしましょう？」
"OK...and would you like anything for dessert?".

◆マークとアンは互いを見合わせ、アンが尋ねます。「後で決めてもいいですか？」
Mark and Anne look at each other and Anne asks "Can we decide later please?"

◇「もちろんです。ありがとうございます。ではすぐにワインをお持ちします。」
"Of course. Thank you, I'll be right back with the wine."

■マークとアンはおいしくサラダを食べ、まもなくメインコースというところ。そこでマークがフォークを落としてしまいました。彼はフォークを拾い上げ、ウェイターを呼びます。
Mark and Anne enjoy their salads and soon they have their main courses. Just then, Mark drops his fork. He picks it up, and then calls the waiter over.

◆「すみません、フォークを落としてしまったので、違うのをもらえますか？」
"Excuse me, I dropped my fork. Could I have another one please?"

◇「もちろんです。少々お待ちを。」
"Of course sir, just a moment."

■すぐにマークは新しいフォークをもらい、二人は残りの食事を楽しくいただきました。
Soon, Mark has his new fork, and the couple enjoy the rest of their food.

■彼らはデザートを食べることにしました。
They decide to have a dessert too.

◆「すみません、デザートメニューをお願いできますか？」マークがウェイターに頼みます。
"Excuse me, could we see the dessert menu please?" Mark asks the waiter.

■ウェイターがメニューを持ってきて、マークはティラミスを注文します。アンはどれにしようか迷っています。
He brings it over, and Mark orders the tiramisu. Anne is still not sure what she wants.

◆「えーと、そうですね…チョコレートのものがいいのだけれど、」彼女が言います。「何かオススメはあるかしら？」
"Hmmm...let me see...I feel like something with chocolate," she says. "Could you recommend something?"

◇「ええ、マダム。温かいチョコレートソースがかかったプロフィトロールはいかがでしょか。」
"Yes madam, the profiteroles are made with a delicious warm chocolate sauce."

◆「うーん、ちょっとクリーミー過ぎるかしら。」とアン。
"Oh, maybe they'd be too creamy for me," says Anne.

◇「では、ホームメイドのチョコレートケーキもおいしいですよ。本場イタリアのヴァニラ・アイスクリームがついているのですが…」
"Well, our homemade chocolate cake is very good. It comes with authentic Italian vanilla ice-cream..."

◆「それはおいしそう！それにするわ。」と微笑みながらアンが言います。
"That sounds delicious! I'll have that please," says Anne smiling.

◆「それからコーヒーを二つ。」マークが付け加えます。
"And two coffees please", adds Mark.

■しばらくしてマークとアンは食事を終え、とてもハッピーな気分です。
A little later, Mark and Anne have finished their meal and are feeling very happy.

◆「お勘定をお願いします。」マークが頼みます。
"Could we have the bill please?" asks Mark.

■勘定を払い、テーブルにチップを少々置いていきます。素晴らしい晩でした！（ベリーニはロンドンの47 Kensington Court、地下鉄ハイストリート・ケンジントン駅の近くです。）
They pay the bill, and leave a small tip on the table. It has been a wonderful evening!
